Buying Sneakers & Shoes Helpful Hints

It’s always important to get a good pair of supportive shoes or sneakers that fit well not only for ourselves, but for our children as well.

Tips for a comfortable pair of shoes:

Always bring your orthotics with you when shoe shopping. New shoes and sneakers should be purchased in the late afternoon or evening and never in the morning, as the feet do swell and fatigue as the day progresses. When you first get your new footwear, wear them on carpet or floors at home for a half hour in the evening. Problems with fit and comfort often occur after wearing them up to 20 minutes, not the few minutes of trying them on in the store. If you still feel comfortable after half an hour you are good to go, if not, you should have no problem returning them.

Rather than going by your usual shoe size, take into account the comfort and fit of the shoes/sneakers since sizes can range from a 1 – 3 size difference, depending upon the manufacturer and style. If you have one foot that is smaller than the other, you need to fit the larger foot and add an insole to the shoe/sneaker you will wear on the smaller foot.

Wear and Tear Signs

When your shoes start wearing out, it's time for a new pair. Check the tread and mid-sole, the cushiony part just before the sole. If the shoe displays signs of uneven wear, it's time to look for a new pair of shoes. Athletic shoes should be replaced yearly; running shoes should be replaced every 300–400 miles or so. Whatever style shoe or sneaker you choose to buy, enjoy them and put some spring in your step.

Supportive Shoes

Look for shoes that are stiff in the middle, but bend at the ball of the foot. If you can bend the shoe/sneaker in the middle like a taco, don’t buy it. Sneakers should be worn for all active sports, walking, and for most activities at home and for shopping as they offer the necessary support and cushioning your feet need. New Balance, Saucony, Avia, and Brooks are some of the top brands that are recommended. Chain store labels are imitations of top brands and do not adequately support your feet. Flip-flops give little or no support and should be avoided as much as possible.
